El profesor Rivera es Cirujano Dentista (DDS). Posee un Diploma en Educación Basada en Competencias y el grado de Magíster (MSc) en Ciencias Biomédicas con mención en Patología Oral por la Universidad de Talca. Es Doctor (PhD) en Estomatopatología por la Universidad Estatal de Campinas (UNICAMP, Brasil).

Desde el año 2011 es académico de la Universidad de Talca, participando de las disciplinas de Embriología, Histología, Patología Oral y Medicina Oral. Su investigación se centra en analizar los aspectos moleculares, histopatológicos y clínicos de las enfermedades orales.

Es editor de la revista Mouth y revisor de Scientific Reports, Oncotarget, Cellular Physiology and Biochemistry, The Protein Journal,  Journal of Dental Research, International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, BMJ Case Reports, Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology y Journal of Oral Research.
